You never know what you’ll see when you visit Ridgefield National Wildlife Refuge in Ridgefield, Washington. But no matter when you go, and no matter what the weather, we can promise you it’ll be pretty special. Ridgefield is the temporary home to thousands of ducks, geese, swans, and other waterfowl that travel through the area every year during their seasonal migration. When it’s not fall and winter waterfowl season, the park is the home to all kinds of other birds.
When you visit the Refuge with your kids, you are also visiting a place of great importance to the Chinookan Peoples, who are the traditional stewards of this land. Make sure your visit includes a stop by the Chinook Plankhouse, where you’ll learn more about the location’s cultural significance.
Use the map in this trail packet to explore the area around the Plankhouse, as well as the nearby white oak grove, lakes, and wetlands. With the stickers, your child can go on an extra special scavenger hunt for all kinds of wetland birds.
Our hands-on Field Guide for this packet includes activities about waterfowl, winter migration, and wetland habitats. And with our pages about the Plankhouse, your child will have a useful introduction to Chinookan architecture and culture.
All materials are hand-illustrated. Map and stickers are waterproof.Perfect for kids ages 4-11. Packet is designed to be used all year round. For the best waterfowl viewing, visit between late fall and early spring (peak month is November).
