If you are looking for a good swimming hole this summer, one of your best bets in the Portland area is Battle Ground Lake State Park near Battle Ground, Washington. The park features a beach, playground, and lots of great views.
But the lake isn't the only reason to put Battle Ground Lake State Park on your must-visit list...especially if you have a family with younger kids!
Here are four other things that make this park a magical place any time of year for family adventuring!
1. The Lake is a Volcanic Crater Lake!
When you visit Battle Ground Lake, you are visiting one of a series of extinct cinder cone volcanoes that form what’s known as the “Boring Lava Fields.” These include Portland area favorite Powell Butte, as well as Larch Mountain and Mount Tabor.
The lake was formed about 105,000 years ago! Another cool fact? In the center, it’s about 60 feet deep!
2. Awesome Forest Finds.
The park has a great nature trail that circumnavigates Battle Ground Lake. One mile in length, and mostly even in elevation, the trail is a great way to explore the woods that make the lake so picturesque.
Families can find dead trees with evidence of woodpecker foraging, as well as lots of centipedes, spiders, and other crawly creatures. While Douglas fir trees dominate the forest, on the back side of the lake, families can also explore wetland plants that grow along the lake’s edge.
3. Sweet Bird Sightings.
The water and forest make the park a great habitat for all kinds of birds, including birds of prey. On a recent trip by the Super Nature Adventures team, for example, a bald eagle was spotted flying over head. For kids who love waterfowl, the trail around the lake also offers views of marshlands where ducks like to swim.
4. The Wonders of Dragonflies and Damselflies.
These gorgeous insects thrive in wetland habitats like the waters’ edge of Battle Ground Lake. When you are visiting, the best way to spot them is along the marshy spots on the nature trail.
Fun fact: these guys are predators of all kinds of aquatic life. In fact, large dragonflies are even known to prey on small tadpoles! WOWZA!
