Welcome to the second of our three part series we’re are doing on our trail packet locations for monthly subscriptions in 2020!
(To learn more about the Feb through May locations, head on over to Part One.)
In this post, we are sharing the locations subscribers will be exploring with their families from June through August.
Summer in the PNW is a Great Time to Head Outdoors
What can we say? Summer in the PNW rocks!
It’s a time of long days, blue skies…and wildflowers, butterflies, and animals of all sorts. The forest comes alive with chatters, chirps, and buzzes - as do the prairies and wetlands where you’ll find ladybugs, dragonflies, butterflies, frogs, snakes, and more.
It’s also time for swimming and river wading, and dramatic waterfall views. Because the winter tends to be gray, in summer take time for the sunsets and snowcapped mountain views.
We'll be celebrating both the small delights and the grandeur of summertime with our 2020 subscription selections.
Summer 2020 Selections, Month by Month
June: Powell Butte
Our June packet selection is our ode to two of our very favorite things: Volcanoes and Grassland Habitats. What better place than an extinct volcano to explore nature at both its grandest and most intimate?
Subscribers will go on a 1.3 mile look to the park’s "Mountain Finder" Lookout for the scavenger map. The packet will feature stickers of butterflies, snakes, slugs, and more. The field guide makes the adventure extra special with activity pages for kids investigate the geology and habitats of the park and reflect creatively on their trip.
The result is a memory making experience in one of Portland's second largest park.
This packet will arrive mid-to-late June. Sign up deadline for this (and all subscription packets) is the first of the month.
July: Lower MacCleay Trail (Old Stone House)
In July, subscribers will explore one of the most iconic forest trails in Portland for an adventure to the Old Stone House (aka “Witches Castle”), spending some time along the way to learn about Forest Park and Balch Creek.
Families will learn about the tallest tree in the park, about a trout habitat in Balch Creek, and all about the Old Stone House’s history.
This packet will arrive mid-to-late July. Sign up deadline for this (and all subscription packets) is the first of the month.
August: Battle Ground Lake State Park
It’s hard to find a more beautiful park within 30 miles of Portland than Battle Ground Lake State Park! With its serene waters and majestic woods - not to mention the playground, camp grounds and seasonal swimming - it’s the perfect place for a kid-friendly family getaway.
Subscribers will get to explore the lush and majestic nature trail that loops all the way around the lake. With their map and stickers, they’ll go on a scavenger hunt for fish and ducks in the lake, squirrels in the trees, bugs on the ground, and more.
The Field Guide will have activities designed to encourage creativity as kids design their own amazing bug (inspired from the common wetland insect, the dragonfly). Kids will get to be fish detectives and will learn all about the wonders and mysteries that lie underneath the lake’s surface.
This packet will arrive mid-to-late August. Sign up deadline for this (and all subscription packets) is the first of the month.
